NBA Investigation into Clippers' Salary Cap Circumvention Continues
The league is focusing on whether the team's introduction of Kawhi Leonard to sponsors constitutes a violation of league rules.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) continues to investigate the Los Angeles Clippers for possible salary cap circumvention. According to a report by ESPN, the league has found no evidence that team owner Steve Ballmer funneled money through sponsors to pay Kawhi Leonard, a key player for the team.
A key aspect of the investigation is whether the Clippers' introduction of Leonard to team sponsors constitutes a violation of league rules. The league is reportedly looking into whether the team failed to supervise their employees in this regard. However, it is unclear what rule this would violate or what the punishment would be.
The Clippers have denied any wrongdoing throughout the investigation. In a statement, the team claimed that they introduced Leonard to companies with which they had business relationships, but did not negotiate or dictate the terms of his endorsement agreements. The team also stated that they did not overpay any vendors or provide them with discounts or favorable terms in order to funnel money to Leonard.
The NBA has been investigating the Clippers for roughly 11 months, following a report by podcaster Pablo Torre. The investigation has centered around Aspiration, a now-bankrupt sustainability company that Ballmer was a large investor in, and Daktronics, the company that made the enormous halo scoreboard at the Intuit Dome.
Any punishment brought about by the league for possible rules violations would need to be upheld through arbitration. The arbitrator and appeals panel would be jointly selected by the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA).
| Rule Violation | Possible Punishment | | --- | --- | | Failure to supervise | Five first-round picks (as seen in the Minnesota Timberwolves case) | | Circumvention | Five first-round picks (as seen in the Minnesota Timberwolves case) |
The Clippers are reportedly negotiating a resolution to the investigation with the NBA. The league is bringing up the punishment it applied to the Minnesota Timberwolves for circumvention as a possible template. However, Ballmer has insisted that the team did not intend to circumvent the salary cap and would instead bring the matter to arbitration.
Kawhi Leonard, 35, is entering his 15th NBA season. He spent seven seasons with the Clippers, including the 2021-22 campaign that he missed with a torn ACL. Leonard is entering the final season of a three-year, $149.5 million contract extension he signed with the Clippers.
| Contract Details | | --- | --- | | Contract Type | Three-year extension | | Contract Value | $149.5 million | | Contract Duration | Three years |
The investigation is ongoing, and it is unclear what the outcome will be. However, the fact that negotiations between the NBA and the Clippers are occurring suggests that this matter could be reaching a resolution.
