The Miami Heat have internal interest in adding a veteran guard to bolster their backcourt depth, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer. The team still has room to carry a 15th player without exceeding its hard cap.

Fischer, speaking on a Bleacher Report live stream, addressed several potential options. Free agent Gabe Vincent, who played for Miami from 2019 to 2023, has fans within the Heat's front office and among current players. However, Fischer suggested a reunion with the 30-year-old guard is not the likely outcome.

Fischer also dismissed the notion that Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving is a realistic trade target for the Heat at this point. He stressed that Miami does not view its roster as finalized and will continue monitoring the market for backcourt help.

Keshad Johnson's Return

Forward Keshad Johnson recently re-signed with the Heat on a two-way contract. According to Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald, Johnson said "a few"teams offered him standard contracts, though he did not specify the financial details."For guys in my position, that have been at the minimum, you're trying to stick around as long as you can and live the dream as long as you can," Johnson told Jackson. "I felt comfortable here with the Heat. I wasn't ready to move on. I have a lot of unfinished business here."

Scout's Critical Assessment

In the same report, Jackson spoke to a veteran scout who provided a blunt assessment of the Heat's championship prospects for the 2026/27 season. The scout does not view Miami as a legitimate contender, citing significant concerns with the guard rotation.

"Their guard play isn't good enough. Just not good enough," the scout said. "Their frontcourt is very, very formidable. But the pure talent level at guard is my issue. You have a bunch of backup guards, either what they've been traditionally or at this stage of their careers."

The scout questioned the playmaking and scoring ability within the group. "Where's the creation from their guards? (Tim) Hardaway (Jr.) is not a creator. (Klay) Thompson is not a creator. (Davion) Mitchell is somewhat. Hardaway is not really a scorer; he's more of a shooter. Who among those guards is getting to the free throw line a lot? My concerns with them are strictly about their backcourt."## Evaluating Offseason Acquisitions

The scout also evaluated Miami's key offseason additions: Klay Thompson, Tim Hardaway Jr., Bobby Portis, and Nick Richards."serviceable" defender but worried about his one-dimensional game.

The scout expressed a preference for a different player at a similar price point. "I would have rather had Anfernee Simons for the same money," the scout told Jackson. "Simons can play point guard (as well as shooting guard). Hardaway cannot. Simons has more dimensions to his game; you get a combo guard vs. A straight shooter. And this team needed another combo guard."
