Rockets Sign Amen Thompson To $208 Million Extension
The Houston Rockets have signed guard Amen Thompson to a five-year, $208 million rookie scale contract extension.

The Houston Rockets have secured guard Amen Thompson on a five-year, $208 million rookie scale contract extension. ESPN's Shams Charania reported the agreement, which includes a 10% trade kicker for the player.
Thompson is currently in the final season of his four-year rookie contract, earning approximately $12.3 million for the 2026-27 campaign. His new extension will take effect next summer and run through the 2031-32 NBA season.
Thompson's Rising Role in Houston
The fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft has grown into a central figure for the Rockets over his first three seasons. His defensive prowess earned him a spot on the All-Defensive first team and a fifth-place finish in Defensive Player of the Year voting for the 2024-25 season. Thompson led the entire NBA in total minutes played (2,953) during the 2025-26 season, posting career-best averages of 18.3 points, 5.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.
The team's performance metrics underscore his value. Houston posted a net rating of +6.6 with Thompson on the court last season. That figure dropped to a team-worst +1.6 when he was on the bench.
His responsibilities expanded significantly last year after a season-ending ACL injury to starting point guard Fred VanVleet. Thompson's usage rate climbed to a career-high 20.0% during the regular season as he assumed more ball-handling duties.
Rockets' Core Investment Strategy
Thompson's deal represents the latest and largest long-term commitment the Rockets have made to their recent draft capital. The franchise has now extended five of its first-round selections from the 2021-23 drafts. His $208 million pact surpasses the value of previous deals given to other young Rockets.

Extension Landscape and Projections
Thompson becomes the second player from the 2023 draft class to sign a rookie scale extension this offseason. He joins San Antonio Spurs big man Victor Wembanyama, who finalized a five-year, maximum-salary deal projected to be worth $252.3 million. Twenty other players remain eligible for rookie scale extensions ahead of the October 19 deadline.
An earlier analysis by Hoops Rumors' Rory Maher projected a five-year deal for Thompson in the range of $40-45 million annually. The finalized contract averages $41.6 million per year. The inclusion of the trade kicker provides a potential financial incentive if Thompson is traded before the contract concludes. The NBA's official transaction log later confirmed the extension was official.
