Former Purdue forward Trey Kaufman-Renn has filed a court motion to obtain a sixth year of collegiate eligibility. The 24-year-old's legal action centers on a change in NCAA rules regarding medical hardship waivers.

Kaufman-Renn redshirted his first season before playing four years for the Boilermakers. Over his career, he averaged 11.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. His junior season was particularly strong, earning him First Team All-Big 10 honors with averages of 20.1 points and 6.5 rebounds.

The Core Of The Legal Argument

The player's argument hinges on an eligibility exception that no longer exists. Under previous rules, a player who missed most of a season due to injury could seek a waiver for an extra year. Kaufman-Renn suffered a knee injury requiring surgery during his freshman redshirt year in 2021/22. The new rules have closed that loophole.

His attorney, Mickey Weber, framed the case as a matter of fairness. "He does not ask this Court to give him something the old rules withheld," Weber wrote in the motion. "He asks not to be the one person left outside a benefit the NCAA handed to everyone else."

Potential Outcomes And NBA Complications

Should the motion succeed, it's unclear if Kaufman-Renn would return to Purdue. The report notes that question is complicated. He claims multiple programs have shown interest. His legal filing asks the court not to block him from enrolling, transferring to, practicing with, or competing for any NCAA team.

The case also intersects with his professional status. Kaufman-Renn was selected 59th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2026 NBA Draft. He played five Summer League games for them, posting the following stats:

StatAverage Per Game
Points6.6
Rebounds3.8
Minutes12.7

He has yet to sign a deal with Minnesota. The Wolves have already filled all three of their two-way contract slots. Kaufman-Renn has asked the court to ensure his NBA draft status is not held against him in the NCAA's deliberation on his eligibility.
