Yahoo High Score Fantasy Basketball Draft Strategy 2026-27

Yahoo High Score fantasy basketball draft strategy for the 2026-27 NBA season must adapt to a scoring system that redefines player value. In this format, only the single best weekly performance from each of six starters counts toward a team's total, making explosive stat lines more critical than consistent averages. The point values assigned to categories shift the foundation of standard rankings, demanding a new approach on draft day.

The scoring system is the core of the change. Steals and blocks are each worth 3 points, providing a massive boost to defensive specialists. Assists are valued at 2 points, while rebounds and points scored are each worth just 1 point. This is a direct devaluation of rebounds compared to Yahoo's standard points leagues, where they are worth 1.2 points. Turnovers do not deduct points, removing a common penalty for high-usage players.

Roster construction rules

Managers must build a 10-player roster within specific positional constraints. The starting lineup requires two guards, three frontcourt players, and one flex spot. Four bench spots complete the roster. This structure, combined with the scoring changes, places a premium on versatile players. Only 19 players ranked within the top 120 possess dual guard/frontcourt eligibility for the upcoming season, making them scarce and valuable assets.

The list of players with that coveted G/FC eligibility includes:

Brandon Ingram is also on the list but is noted as injured.

Positional value shifts

Guards gain significant value due to the scoring emphasis on steals and assists. "Guards are worth more in High Score than in regular points leagues," the author said. The data from the previous season confirms this dramatic shift. Cade Cunningham improved from 6th to 3rd in per-game value under High Score scoring. Darius Garland rose from 61st to 45th. Andrew Nembhard moved up from 59th to 44th.

Conversely, traditional big men face a reduced upside. Donovan Clingan fell from 44th to 61st in per-game value when moving from standard points to High Score scoring. Rudy Gobert ranked 55th in standard scoring but dropped to 72nd under the new system. Forwards and centers typically dry up fast in the draft, but their relative value is lower here.

Top target players

Elite players who excel in the weighted categories become premier draft targets. Joel Embiid, despite playing only 38 games last season, suited up for 17 of 25 fantasy weeks. His best weekly game averaged about 53 fantasy points under High Score scoring, illustrating the format's reward for single-game explosions. Derrick White, who averaged 2.4 combined steals and blocks per game last season, is another archetype of the high-value guard.

Managers should target players with high stocks-steals plus blocks. Tyrese Maxey averaged 2.6 stocks per game. Ausar Thompson averaged 2.0 steals and 0.9 blocks, totaling nearly three per game. Rookies and late-draft picks with defensive upside are also key. Matas Buzelis's best weekly game averaged 31% more than his typical night, perfect for a format where "you only need one game from a starter each week." Mikel Brown Jr. Is identified as a late-draft rookie target with similar upside.

A sample draft from the 2026-27 outlook saw guards and versatile wings prioritized early.

Other notable players for the season include Darius Acuff Jr., running point for Sacramento, and Darryn Peterson, the No. 2 overall pick expected to get significant time in Utah. Amen Thompson is noted for defensive upside similar to his twin Ausar. With guards easier to find late in the draft, the early rounds demand a focus on players with high steal and block potential.
