News: LeBron James has signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, aiming to help Joel Embiid win his first NBA championship

LeBron James has joined the Philadelphia 76ers to help Joel Embiid win his first NBA championship after more than a decade without a title. The 41-year-old free agent signed a two-year, $8 million contract in July and will be formally introduced at the 2026 NBA media day in Philadelphia.

James stated his primary goal is to help Embiid secure a championship, noting the star center has carried the city for 10 to 12 years. He wants to be the final piece that helps Embiid get over the hump. Embiid has won the NBA MVP award, earned seven All-Star selections, and captured an Olympic gold medal, but has never won an NBA title or reached the Finals in his entire career with the 76ers, who drafted him third overall in 2014. The Sixers gave Embiid a three-year, $192.9 million extension in 2024, with the player expressing his desire to stay and win in Philadelphia.

Maxey and Brown Form New Core

James highlighted playing with Tyrese Maxey as a main reason for joining the 76ers. He values Maxey's character and consistency, and the two share an agent and have been friends and workout partners since Maxey entered the league. James also pointed to the acquisition of Jaylen Brown as a key move, calling it another piece nobody saw coming. He praised Brown's approach to the game on both sides of the floor. James stated Philadelphia was not a consideration until the Sixers acquired Brown from the Boston Celtics, a trade that addressed a power forward need and made the team a legitimate championship destination. The 76ers' new starting lineup is projected to include Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, VJ Edgecombe, LeBron James, and Jaylen Brown.

Health Concerns Remain for Embiid

Health is the biggest question mark for Joel Embiid. Former NBA star Steve Nash noted that Embiid's health has been a major disappointment given his talent, suggesting his body cannot take the strain after strong playoff performances. In the 2025-26 season, Embiid played 38 regular-season games, averaging 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.9 assists. He underwent an appendectomy in April. During the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks in May 2026, Embiid played through an ankle injury and a sore hip. James believes he can help Embiid be better prepared for the daily demands of a deep playoff run and unlock something else in him.

Contract and Timeline Details

James revealed his decision during an interview on the Mind the Game podcast with Steve Nash, which dropped on a Friday. He will be formally introduced as a 76ers player at the 2026 NBA media day in Philadelphia and is scheduled to meet with reporters at the team's facility in Camden, New Jersey, on Monday. Training camp opens next week. James, a four-time NBA champion and 22-time All-Star, averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds per game last season. The Sixers finished 45-37 last season and were swept in the second round by the New York Knicks. James was a free agent who decided not to return to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he spent eight consecutive seasons, the longest continuous stretch with one team in his career. He expressed disappointment at missing a championship parade with the Lakers due to the 2020 pandemic. His formal introduction at the 2026 NBA media day in Philadelphia will mark the official start of this new chapter.
