Devin Carter made an immediate impact in his Celtics debut. The rookie guard finished with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, attempting the second-most foul shots in the game.

On-court impact and coaching praise

The Celtics outscored the Cleveland Cavaliers by 22 points during Carter's 24 minutes on the floor. When he sat, the team was outscored by 11 points. His defensive energy and ability to draw contact drew immediate praise.

Assistant coach DJ MacLeay highlighted Carter's knack for getting fouled and putting pressure on defenses. Former Exhibit-10 player Luka Garza commended Carter's ball pressure and defensive instincts. Head coach Joe Mazzulla noted the guard's standout mindset, competitiveness, and humility during training camp.

The Exhibit-10 path to Boston

Carter's route to Boston mirrors recent Celtics success stories. He was drafted 14th overall by Sacramento in 2024, traded to Atlanta in a June salary dump, and waived last month before signing an Exhibit-10 training camp deal with Boston.

The Celtics have one open two-way contract spot remaining. This path has previously led to significant deals for other players. Neemias Queta was cut by the Kings, signed a two-way deal with Boston, and later secured a $54 million contract extension. Last fall, Ron Harper Jr. competed for a two-way spot on an Exhibit-10; he is now on a three-year deal with the Celtics.

Carter's mindset and future focus

Playing near his college stomping grounds at Providence, an hour from Boston, Carter expressed gratitude for his new opportunity. He stated his focus is on a potential future with the Celtics rather than dwelling on his past transactions with Sacramento and Atlanta.

"Everything's top class. Great players, great guys off the court. That matters just as much as who they are on the court," Carter said. He thanked president of basketball operations Brad Stevens and the organization for the chance.

What comes next for Carter

With the preseason underway, Carter's standout debut has squarely positioned him to compete for Boston's remaining two-way contract spot. His performance demonstrated the potential value an Exhibit-10 deal can quickly bring to a contending roster.
