Wolves GM Discusses Williams, Ball, DiVincenzo Injuries
Timberwolves GM Matt Lloyd discussed new acquisition Cody Williams, LaMelo Ball's work ethic, and Donte DiVincenzo's rehab in an interview with 5

Timberwolves general manager Matt Lloyd discussed several roster topics in an interview with Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News. The conversation covered new acquisition Cody Williams, LaMelo Ball's integration, and the recovery timeline for injured guard Donte DiVincenzo.
Lloyd pointed to forward Cody Williams' play at the end of the 2025/26 season as a key reason for the team's interest. The Wolves acquired Williams from Utah in a trade last weekend, a move that created financial flexibility and preceded the official signing of Jonathan Kuminga on Thursday. Lloyd expressed hope that the 21-year-old Williams, a former lottery pick, can become a versatile wing defender.
"There was a reason he was the 10th pick in the draft," Lloyd said. The team plans to evaluate his fit starting Tuesday when most of the roster reports and throughout the preseason.
LaMelo Ball's Work Ethic
The Timberwolves conducted extensive background research on LaMelo Ball before trading for the former Rookie of the Year. Lloyd stated that people around the league described Ball as a dedicated and focused worker. Ball has spent much of the summer with the team, familiarizing himself with the organization and working on his game.
"He's been in there 90 percent of the day since the day we acquired him," Lloyd noted. He praised Ball's work ethic and the positive energy he brings.
DiVincenzo's Recovery & Extension Talks
Lloyd expressed optimism about guard Donte DiVincenzo potentially returning from a torn Achilles tendon at some point during the 2026/27 season. DiVincenzo suffered the injury in the first round of the playoffs. Lloyd praised the 29-year-old's impact and diligent rehab but declined to set a specific return timeline.
When asked about a potential contract extension for DiVincenzo, Lloyd did not rule it out. He noted the team has the entire league year, through June 30, 2027, to make a decision.
Other Roster Business
The interview also touched on extension-eligible players Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert. Lloyd suggested the team might wait to see how the season unfolds before making decisions. McDaniels' extension window closes in October, though he still has three years remaining on his current contract.
Lloyd highlighted Anthony Edwards' continued growth as a leader. He also indicated that Ayo Dosunmu is expected to play major minutes whether he starts or comes off the bench.
